My Opinion: Time to be realistic about golf carts

My Opinion: Time to be realistic about golf carts

For the AJC

As construction projects go, the new golf cart path and bridge nearing completion in southern Fayette County doesn’t compare to the scope of the east and west bypasses also under way. It’s not quite a “bridge to nowhere,” but unless the county and its municipalities standardize their golf cart regulations, the new route along Redwine Road will be somewhat of a path to pointlessness.

Construction of this new path began last fall with a $740,000 grant from the federal Safe Routes to Schools program, which supports projects that make it easier for kids to walk and bike to school. the extension allows the folks in Highgrove, Whitewater and New Haven – all just outside the official Peachtree City borders – to connect with Peachtree City’s 90-mile path system and have direct access to Peeples Elementary, Rising Starr Middle and Starr’s mill High, plus the rest of the city.

Problem is, students can’t take golf carts to Starr’s mill as they do at nearby McIntosh High School, where many students use them daily. Parents can ferry students to Starr’s mill by cart, but high schoolers of driving age (even those who live within Peachtree City) must either ride the bus or drive their own cars, and most choose the latter. the school lacks a designated parking lot for carts and a crossing guard across Redwine Road, but surely a facility that prides itself on preparing so many Georgia Tech students can figure that out.

Parking isn’t the only issue; there are different age and permit requirements for golf cart drivers inside and outside Peachtree City. inside, students age 15 with a learner’s permit can drive a golf cart alone or with one other teen over 15, but set one foot outside the city line and the county requires 15-year-olds to be accompanied by a licensed driver over 18. In the city, anyone over 16 with or without a driver’s license can legally drive a golf cart, which is especially helpful for the elderly. In the county, that’s not allowed. And that’s just silly.

It’s time for local laws to reflect common sense and reality. Peachtree City and its cart paths are no longer a closed system. Between 1995 and 2010, 24 subdivisions that border Peachtree City have authorized golf carts on their residential streets, connecting where possible to the city paths. This allows more residents to get to schools, golf courses, shopping centers and other places of common necessity without using expensive gas or adding to traffic congestion. It’s smart, practical and (let’s admit it) just plain fun. Golf carts are safe and more environmentally friendly than cars, and their use should be encouraged.

Golf. It used to be such a pristine sport.

With the majestic courses that are meticulously maintained, and it's regal, almost royal air of sophistication, the sport has always been up near the top as the ultimate gentleman's game.

Apparently 61-year-old James Hines didn't get that memo, as this past Saturday police were called to the Jacksonville Beach Golf Club due to some violent actions of an ungentlemanly mr. Hines; actions that mainly consisted of ramming his golf cart into people and committing various other means of violence to assault others.

Shortly before 5 pm on that Saturday, police responded to a call at the golf club that two groups of golfers were involved in fights with golf clubs. According to reports, the main aggressor was Hines, and boy did he have a rage moment.

Apparently, enraged that the group in front of him wasn't following proper golf etiquette; they were driving over the greens, drinking, and not moving at a stately pace from hole to hole, Hines smacked a golf ball at the group. They responded by throwing the ball back at Hines, starting a yelling match between the two groups.

soon after, further enraged, Hines hopped into his golf cart and accelerated towards the other group. he crashed into the other group on the 18th, pinning one victim between two carts and running over another. Hines then leapt out of the cart swinging a golf club, hitting one, and starting a fight between the two groups.

the police soon arrived, and after getting the facts, arrested Hines and charged him with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

Two of the victims sustained minor injuries as a result of the incident, but both declined to be taken to the hospital. Instead they were treated on scene by emergency rescue personnel.

In the end, Hines' rage not only cost him one good day of golf, but maybe many others depending on the sentence he will receive. either way, it's doubtful he'll be seeing a golf course for a little while, much to the relief of every other golfer in Florida.

The Power Golf Trolley

 The Power Golf Trolley

Will a power golf trolley improve your golf swing? Well, yes and no. Assuming you don’t have a caddy and your alternative is to lug your golf clubs from hole to hole, having an electric golf trolley to do all the hard work for you will allow you more mental space to concentrate on getting that swing a little more perfect. of course, if you don’t have the ability to make a reasonable precision drive in the first place, then maybe not. There is one thing you should know about a power golf trolley: don’t just look for the cheapest deal you can find. That really is false economy. get your electric trolley from a dealer who specialises in making them. this won’t be someone who is just into selling golf equipment; it will be someone who is selling a power golf trolley that they care about. They may sell golf packages as well, but their core product should be the trolley.look at it this way. You presumably want a piece of engineering equipment that delivers on its promise. something that has been designed with the game of golf in mind. In fact, designed by golfers for golfers, if possible, for that way it will perform exactly how you want it to, effortlessly travelling over the green with a variable speed control, high efficiency motor, waterproof to accommodate all weathers. And most importantly, it will carry your golf clubs, your golf balls, your golf bags, golf gloves, golf shoes – and anything else golf-wise that you have in mind – over the entire course without recharge needed for the battery! You can probably get a power golf trolley at a real knockdown easily affordable discount from some warehouse place that sells everything to everyone. the electric trolley you get will probably look great and might even perform well too. will the warehouse provide you with a quality servicing and maintenance option? probably not. so, if something goes wrong, what are you going to do?when you buy quality you always get the best there is. You get servicing and maintenance, at least as an option. You are also dealing with a company that understands the product it is selling you. Precision golf trolleys deliver more power and more durability. They deliver better quality engineering that will stay the course in terms of reliability. Expect a high efficiency motor that can easily do the work of three dedicated caddies. And yes, your golf swing could improve too, though that bit is really up to you. At least you won’t have to worry about a power golf trolley that keeps breaking down, or a battery that keeps running out of charge.

WSMV Channel 4 Franklin police enforcing golf cart laws after teen’s death

WSMV Channel 4 Franklin police enforcing golf cart laws after teens deathFRANKLIN, TN (WSMV) –

Franklin police said they're stepping up enforcement of laws about golf carts after two recent crashes involving teenagers.

Ryan Tropauer, 15, was killed last week after the cart he was riding in hit a mailbox. Three other teens were hurt in the crash.

Back in April, three girls were hurt when their cart overturned.

Franklin police are reminding people that driving golf carts on city streets is illegal unless the vehicle meets specific standards.

Vicky, who asked us not to use her last name, because many of her neighbors in the Westhaven community don't share her views, said she doesn't like seeing underage drivers behind the wheel of golf carts on the public streets.

“The kids who are under 16, parents wouldn't let them drive cars. They shouldn't drive these,” she said.

Officers said they've asked neighborhoods to follow the law, and now they will start citing drivers who don't.

“Just think about this, it just takes one second for something tragic to happen,” said Franklin Police Sgt. Charles Warner.

In some residential communities in Williamson County, golf carts are just part of the culture. You see them parked at businesses, and there's even a special golf cart parking section at the grocery store.

For Vicky, they're a great way to get around. but her golf cart is legally registered, has headlights and a horn, and she said she is street-legal. but she knows she is the exception.

“With summertime months upon us, and school letting out, this is the time to really educate parents and their teens as far as what's allowed and what's not allowed,” Warner said.

“Low-speed vehicles” are allowed, but they must be operated by a licensed driver and require safety equipment like lights, mirrors and seatbelts.

Violations will come with a $50 fine, and Franklin police said officers will enforce the law against adults as well.

Golf Carts and Paper Plates: Will Military Cuts Force Us to Use Carter Era Military Training Techniques? « Give Me Liberty

Golf Carts and Paper Plates: Will Military Cuts Force Us to Use Carter Era Military Training Techniques? « Give Me Liberty

This is from CNSNews.

If Obama gets reelected we will not have a military.

It is scary the Chicoms are ramping up their defenses.

Obama is gutting our defense.

Major General Andrew Davis, Executive Director of the Reserve Officers Association appeared on Secure Freedom Radio to discuss what $500 billion in additional cuts to our military from the Budget Control Act of 2011 could mean.

The cuts are part of the sequestration mechanism included in the budget.

General Davis, who served during the ‘hollow’ Carter and Clinton years, recounted some of the alarming techniques used to save costs on training:

“I came back from Vietnam in 1971, was on the drill field, left active service and joined the reserves in the late 70s and I was in an infantry battalion headquartered in Chicago and literally we ran through the woods, yelling bang bang during the Carter years because there was no training ammunition. And we were getting ready to do a tank infantry exercise with NATO troops in Europe and we were literally using paper plates to simulate mines because [there were] no training resources.

“We fast forward, now, to Desert Storm and there was a Marine reserve tank battalion that was activated, who were driving M-60 tanks. They got to Saudi Arabia, turned in the keys to their M-60s through M-1s and fought magnificently in the breach and up to Kuwait City. They get back to the reserve center several months later and there’s no M-60 tanks cause they had turned them in and there’s no M-1 tanks. And literally they were training on tank tactics by driving golf carts around golf courses.

While these training techniques are laughable, the threats they pose are not.

Unless we act to reverse sequestration, a readiness deficiency similar to that experienced by General Davis may await our armed forces.

Increasingly assertive international actors such as Russia and China, as well as the recent North Korean nuclear missile test, demonstrate a clear need to maintain a well-trained military.

Leaders in the House Armed Services Committee recognized the threat earlier this week when they voting a 2013 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) out of committee which addresses these threats and by providing the military with adequate funding to prepare our soldiers.

The full House is expected to pass this legislation next week.  Hopefully the Senate will place an equally strong emphasis on preserving our national defense when they consider their version of the 2013 NDAA.

Lakers fans are most rowdy, worst tippers, says DTLA bar staff

A Laker fan enjoying a beverage.

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES — for the first time ever, all three sports tenants of Staples Center will host playoff games. while some fear the impending traffic jams, others wince at the idea of even more games where they have to serve fans who don’t treat them right.

A recent trip to some of Downtown’s biggest bars uncovered some trends among the different teams’ fans.

In an unscientific study of several establishments, supporters of the L.A. Kings drink the most alcohol – by far.

Abe Kim, the manager of Hooters on Figueroa Street, said that at his restaurant Kings fans prefer to drink beer over any of the other choices from the fully stocked bar.

“If it’s a Kings’ crowd, domestic [beer sells].” Kim said, adding that the majority of the hockey fans at Hooter’s enjoy Coors, Budweiser, and Pabst Blue Ribbon.

When Kings fans dine at Wolfgang Puck’s at L.A. Live, they class it up a bit, preferring martinis and well drinks, according to one bartender.

There is one consensus at all the bars though: Kings fans like to eat.

“They want to eat everything,” said Angel Baez, who tends bar at Wolfgang Puck’s, explaining that often the puck fans will eat full three course meals.

The other consensus about the Kings was that they were the most pleasant fans and great tippers.

“[The Kings are] the best crowd,” Baez said.

Clippers fans, on the other hand, are far less excited about their team and drink a lot less, said Fred Deese, a Staples Center employee who frequents Trader Vics. He explained that the typical Trader Vic’s Clippers fan drinks a lot of wine and champagne and overall, are a fairly mellow crowd.

Overall, the bars surveyed agreed that Clippers fans are never a problem.

The same could not be said about Lakers fans. Most of the bars agreed that fans of the Purple & Gold are the least-pleasant crowd to serve.

“Lakers fans are trying to get drunk before the game,” Baez said with a smile. He also said Laker fans tend to be impatient and get upset if their food does not come in a timely manner.

They were also ranked lowest of the three sports teams when it comes to generosity in tipping.

“[You] rarely see a Lakers fan buy a full meal,” said Jessica Palmisano, the manager of Big Wang’s on Grand Avenue. she said that at her bar, fans drink beer but also dabble in Jägermeister, Jack Daniel’s, and Hennessy shots.

Palmisano also said that Lakers fans can get a little out of control. in the last five minutes of the deciding game of the 2010 NBA Finals, she had to hide the bar’s glassware as a preventative measure; but that didn’t stop customers from trying to dump a fan in the outdoor fire pit.

With the Lakers currently down 0-2 to Oklahoma City, Palmisano said this weekend could get ugly too.

“Lakers fans get rowdier than Clippers fans,” she said. “[If the Lakers get swept this weekend] I would not be averse to taking away glassware.”

‘Community’ Moved To Friday; Dan Harmon and a Certain Star May Not Return

1337450598 42 ‘Community’ Moved To Friday; Dan Harmon and a Certain Star May Not Return

A few days back, the news came that Dan Harmon‘s Community had been renewed for a fourth season and everyone rejoiced. This latest bit of news may cool a bit of that rejoicing.

Over the weekend NBC announced a move in their fall schedule, shifting Community from Thursdays to the Friday night death slot where shows go to die — this despite the slight ratings boost the show has enjoyed since coming back from hiatus.

Ready for more troubling news? show runner Dan Harmon and star Chevy Chase have not yet signed on to return. As to whether or not their status is related to their behind-the-scenes feud, and words said by Chevy at the season three wrap party remains to be seen.

Going back to the schedule switch, NBC president Robert Greenblatt insists that the move is perfect for the show, (you know, if you want to kill it completely):

“The show has its faithful audience and they will follow it to the ends of the Earth. and I really wanted to do something to invigorate Friday because we love Grimm. So I thought, let’s move a show where the audience will move with it. I actually look at the positive side of it, although no good deed goes unpunished.”

According to Greenblatt, a deal could be struck for Harmon’s return soon:

“Those conversations are happening as we speak, I guess what I would say is … I expect Dan’s voice to be part of the show somehow. I’m just not sure exactly if that means him running it day to day or consulting on it.”

Harmon spoke up about where he stands on season four, via twitter “Guys, if I ‘didn’t come back,’ it wouldn’t be because Chevy’s a prick. That’d be like punching a wall because water’s wet. Now CELEBRATE!”

At least he’s being honest about his feelings and yes, fans should celebrate. It is hard however, knowing that the creator of a fan favorite show might not be coming back to lead it’s production. We’ll keep you posted as this develops, until then rejoice at half speed, you know, just in case.

Annular Solar Eclipse 1337436193 45 Annular Solar Eclipse « Space « Science Today: Beyond the Headlines

Sunday evening, may 20, will offer a spectacular sight to sky-viewers in the western US—an annular solar eclipse.

Solar eclipses occur when the Moon passes directly between the Sun and Earth. in contrast to total solar eclipses, when the disk of the Moon completely covers the disk of the Sun, as seen from Earth, annular solar eclipses occur when the Moon lies slightly farther away, appearing slightly smaller than the Sun.  As a result, the Moon doesn’t completely block the Sun and instead leaves a bright ring of the solar disk visible around it—like a dime laid on top of a penny.  This ring is called an “annulus,” and it will be bright enough to wash the Sun’s outer atmosphere, or corona, from view.

While solar eclipses occur about every six months, it’s a rare treat to see it from your own backyard—you have to be in the right place, at the right time. The next time an eclipse will cast its shadow on the western US is a total solar eclipse on August 21, 2017.

Sunday’s eclipse will begin in Asia around 2:19 p.m. our time. You can watch its progress live online.

In the western United States, it will follow a narrow line from Eureka and Redding through Reno, Carson City, Albuquerque, and Lubbock. Observers will see the silhouette of the new Moon slowly passing directly in front of the Sun’s disk.

While we won’t see the entire event here in the San Francisco Bay Area, we’ll still get a great view! For us, the eclipse begins at 5:16 p.m. and ends at 7:40 p.m., with maximum eclipse occurring at 6:33 p.m., when the Moon will cover 89% of the Sun’s diameter, turning the Sun into a thin, graceful crescent.  The change in illumination won’t plunge us into darkness, but with most of the Sun’s disk blocked from view, people should notice something odd or different about the quality of daylight.

Looking directly at the Sun is never safe, and it is especially important with all the excitement this weekend that everyone remains cautious. We’ve produced a fun, informative video on how to view the eclipse safely.

If you’re in the area and we’re fog-free, join us in front of the Academy Sunday evening to view this spectacular event!
